what is subprime mortgage?

I often encounter this term when reading news reports about the collapse of the real estate industry specially in the USA. what role does subprime mortage play in such a gigantic economic mess?, more 

and Would you rent your house for a year to someone who just had a Short Sale of their house?  We were hoping to move out of State for better schools and job opportunities. Due to the market conditions, we cannot sell our house without taking a large loss. So we decided to rent it out and then rent a house ourselves in a new city. We listed our home for rent with an agent for the past 2 months and only got one offer. However, the person who made the rental offer was in the process of selling their home on a Short Sale. This made us feel uncomfortable because how do we know they would pay US the rent? We have no margin for error in the budget. We need their rent to make it work.
In the end, we declined their offer in hope of a tenant with a better credit history. Now, we wonder if we made the right decision.

and MY builder's brick guys did a horrendous job. Is there anything I can do?  I am buying from KB Homes, and we are about halfway through building the house, and we gave $1000 in earnest money. The construction manager has said there is no chance of them redoing the work. The brickwork looks as if it was done by kindergartners. Absolutely unacceptable. The house stands out from the rest of the development like a sore thumb. Can anyone tell me who to contact for some relief? I am in Houston, Texas., more
